Hungarian telecoms operator Magyar Telekom has announced it is upgrading its IP backbone network with two Cisco CRS-1 terabit routers that it hopes will improve network reliability and cater for its future capacity needs. ‘The IP NGN structure provides an open platform to differentiate services: integrated media services in addition to video and IPTV and value added services such as VoIP, interactive gaming, access to digital content and films on demand, will also become available,’ it said in a statement. The upgrade will meet rising demand for broadband services. At the end of March 2007 the incumbent had over 628,000 broadband internet access lines, while the country as a whole counted over a million high speed connections.
