Vimpelcom goes to EDGE

14 May 2007

Vimpelcom, Russia’s second largest cellular operator, has launched 2.5G EDGE technology across its GSM network in the Moscow region. Rival operator MegaFon recently announced the completion of its own EDGE upgrade in the capital, while market leader MTS says it plans to follow suit soon. All three operators were awarded 3G concessions last month and, with a commercial launch of next-generation technology still some way off, they are looking to EDGE to boost mobile data speeds. Average data transmission rates with EDGE stand at around 80kbps-100kbps, with peaks up to 200kbps. Vimpelcom had 48.3 million subscribers across the whole of Russia at the end of March.
