More communities to get broadband via satellite

According to BNamericas, Brazil’s communications and environment ministries have signed a cooperation agreement to provide broadband internet via satellite to 150 indigenous communities located in 13 Brazilian states, including Amazonas and Mato Grosso in the north and the southern coastal state of Santa Catarina. The scheme is part of the government’s universal internet access program ‘Gesac’. The communications ministry recently earmarked BRL250 million (USD121 million) to help set up internet access points in areas with little coverage. BNamericas goes on to say that newspapers have recently reported that Gesac already has 3,300 public access points and aims to reach at least 10,000 in four years.
