India’s Reliance Communications has revealed new plans to expand its global communications unit Flag Telecom’s international fibre-optic submarine network. Over the next three years, Flag plans to build the world’s largest IP network over submarine cable systems. Termed FLAG Next Generation Network (NGN), the project is expected to cater to the telecom needs of over five billion customers worldwide. Flag plans to invest USD1.5 billion in laying 50,000 additional kilometres of undersea cable, with the aim of covering 60 countries. By the end of 2009, the company said its network will span over 1.15 million kilometres.
