Commission approves AOL takeover

29 Nov 2006

Telecom Italia’s takeover of ISP AOL Germany, which according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database served just over a million broadband customers at the end of June 2006, has been approved by the European Union (EU) Commission under its merger regulation. The Commission concluded that the takeover would not significantly impede competition within the EU. Italy’s incumbent telco, which is already active in the German internet market via its wholly owned subsidiary HanseNet Telekommunikation, bid EUR675 million (USD854.7 million) for its rival. HanseNet, which operates under the banner Alice, had 745,000 broadband subscribers at the end of June 2006.
