NTC sees 2007 as earliest date for completing new competition policy

The Filipino telecoms regulator the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) is unlikely to complete work on a new competition policy for the domestic information and communications sector until 2007, according to reports in the Manila Standard Today. The country’s Telecommunication Commissioner Ronald Solis admitted that while the political will exists to tackle difficult competition issues, the process is proving to be an onerous one, indicating perhaps that the major stakeholders, particularly the ruling duopoly, do not intend to give up their dominant position without a fight.
