The Ukrainian arm of Russian-owned alternative telco Golden Telecom has selected French technology provider Alcatel to deploy a converged fixed-mobile next-generation network (NGN) with Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) capabilities. Under a framework contract, Alcatel will deliver its mobile NGN core network solution, UMA trial equipment for GSM/Wi-Fi hybrid phones and the Alcatel 1430 Unified HSS (Home Subscriber Server) equipment to collate all subscriber information over GSM, IMS, UMA, Wi-Fi or WiMAX networks. Rollout will begin in the capital Kiev, and the project is expected to be in commercial operation by the end of this year. Alcatel’s solution will allow Golden to introduce additional converged communication services to new and existing subscribers, especially in the corporate sector, and to expand its geographical presence in the country. The project is also key to its plans to reduce operating costs through fixed-mobile synergies. ‘Our intention is to facilitate the access to our services with a single subscription to mobile, fixed and data services, a single access through any device, a selection of access media, personalised services and many other innovative functionalities’ said Andrii Droniuk, General Director of Golden Telecom Ukraine.
