India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has confirmed that it has given four cellcos permission to trial 3G services on a limited basis. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Nigam (BSNL), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), Bharti Airtel and Hutchison Telecommunications have been given a temporary limited allocation of 3G frequencies with which to test services in closed campuses for technical assessment only. The DoT plans to allot 3G spectrum later this year, and has appointed a panel to look into the pricing and allocation of frequencies.
