State run Indian telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has introduced a new pre-paid service for fixed line users. Unlike its previous pay-as-you-go service, customers no longer need to dial a prefix number to make pre-paid calls. Instead, they set a ceiling on their monthly usage and then use their home phone as usual. Call charges are the same as those for contract customers, and the account balance can be checked online with the option to purchase additional minutes via voucher. BSNL hopes that by adding pre-paid functionality to fixed lines it can stem the flow of users defecting to mobile networks. ‘We are adding functions such as SMS and ring back tones,’ a BSNL official told Business Line. ‘Pre-paid billing is yet another step in this direction.’
