Chilean minister wants increased rural investment

According to local newspaper El Mostrador, quoted by BNamericas, Chilean minister Esteban Valenzuela has called on the transport and telecommunications ministry to spend more money increasing connectivity and broadband penetration in the provinces, and for the focus of the country’s telecoms investment to move away from central Santiago. ‘We have over 200 cities without broadband, no internet connections, but there is USD240 million [to invest] in subway stations [in Santiago],’ he said. The report states that the ministry’s 2007 budget stands at CLP3.0 billion (USD5.6 million).
