According to the Botswana Telecoms Authority (BTA) the number of fixed line subscriptions fell by 3.2% in the year to March 2006, from 136,423 to 132,034. Mobile subscribers increased by 42.5% in the same period, from 577,437 to 823,070. Half the population of 1.7 million now own a mobile phone. According to Telegeography’s GlobalComms database, at the end of March Mascom Wireless led the mobile market with 497,000 subscribers, ahead of Orange Botswana with 327,000 customers. Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) is the sole fixed line operator in the country.
