Operators challenge WiMAX bidding rules

1 Aug 2006

The Brazilian telecoms regulator Anatel has been approached by four companies asking it to cancel the auction of 3.5GHz and 10GHz spectrum for WiMAX services launched on 17 July, according to BNamericas citing local daily Valor Econômico. The online news source says the requests have been submitted by the fixed line operators’ association Abrafix, as well as individual operators Sercomtel, CTBC and Brasil Telecom. The telcos have taken issue with a clause in the bidding rules prohibiting them from bidding for WiMAX spectrum in their existing operating areas. In a statement, Abrafix said the rule constituted ‘an obvious restriction of competition, which could harm society in the long run by impeding the evolution of the telecoms sector.’
