12 Jul 2006

Telephony penetration in India reached 13.95% of the addressable population at the end of June 2006, up from 12.8% three months earlier, according to the latest market report by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Unsurprisingly, the mobile sector was responsible for the bulk of growth, with the number of mobile subscribers rising to 105.95 million, up from 90.14 million at the end of March. Including fixed lines, customers rose to 153.37 million. In the internet access market, broadband users, which it defines as download connections of at least 256kbps, reached 1.55 million, up 240,000.
