15 Jun 2006

Digitel Mobile (Sun Cellular), the wireless arm of Filipino fixed line operator Digital Telecommunications Philippines (Digitel), has completed phase five of its network expansion programme at a cost of USD200 million. In a statement, the company said it had increased coverage and network capacity to four million subscribers, and improved its SMS capacity for both local and international texting. Sun Cellular activated its 3G-capable next generation network (NGN) this year, ahead of the launch of commercial UMTS services in 1H 2007.

Sun Cellular’s parent has invested USD700 million on its networks since March 2003. Work has now begun on the next phase of its network rollout which will increase capacity to six million users by end-December 2006. Sun is rolling out additional cell sites to new locations, benefiting an estimated 291 cities and municipalities, and further improving Sun’s services in Metro Manila, Northern and Southern Luzon and the Visayas and Mindanao areas.
