Khmer wives request 3G ban

26 May 2006

Wives of seven government officials have petitioned Prime Minister Hun Sen to ban 3G phones, on the basis that video capabilities will be used to spread pornography. According to a report in the Cambodia Daily, the wives –one of whom is the Prime Ministers wife – have accused the phones of ‘destroying Khmer culture and polluting the minds of teenagers’. They have called for the government to ‘seriously punish’ anyone found to be using the phones to attract men into sexual relations by sending them explicit pictures. The development will be worrying cellco MobiTel, which is planning to launch 3G services next month.
