BT eyes Indian long-distance market, paper says

UK telco BT Group could become the first foreign company to enter India’s long-distance and international telephony operator, according to the Economic Times. The paper claims the telco is setting up a new joint venture in India as part of its BT Telecom India unit. BT’s planned entry in the domestic consumer market comes following talks on a draft telecom policy about a new carrier pre-select regime which would allow consumers to choose their carrier while making long-distance calls. There are just four players in the Indian long-distance market at present – VSNL, Bharti, Reliance, and BSNL.
