Indian GSM operator Aircel, recently taken over by Maxis Communications, has applied for licences to operate in eight new circles: Haryana, Kolkata, Kerala, Punjab, Mumbai, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. If successful the company plans to spend USD500 million on rolling out services to the new regions, it said in a statement. Malaysia’s Maxis acquired Aircel for USD1.08 billion in January, fighting off a rival bid from Telekom Malaysia to take control of the Chennai-based cellco.
