Reliance Infocomm has announced sweeping price cuts for mobile handsets as part of its One Nation campaign aimed at ramping up penetration in poorer and underserved regions. The operator has cut the price of a number of its basic black-and-white cellular handsets by 40% and colour screen models by 15%. Reliance launched One Nation as part of the government’s One India programme in January, offering mobile and fixed-wireless voice calls starting at INR1 per minute. Since initiating the programme Reliance claims to have signed up more than a million new users a month.
