Philippines’ mobile operator Smart Communications yesterday revealed plans to launch a free trial of 3G mobile services to subscribers in some cities across the country. Ramon Isberto, Smart’s head of public affairs, says the free trial will continue until the cellco believes the market is ready to begin paying for 3G services. The launch of the UMTS network comes just a month after Smart signed a supply deal with Nokia. Isberto went on to say that the company has a 3G presence in Metro Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, Kalibo in Aklan, Baguio City and Davao, and will expand coverage to other parts of the country during 2006.
