Globe Telecom earmarks USD100 million for UMTS network

8 Feb 2006

Filipino mobile operator Globe Telecom says it will spend USD100 million in the first phase to get 3G services off the ground. The cellco’s president and CEO Gerardo Ablaza told reporters that his company sees UMTS services as a key driver for growth, adding that he expects to see a swift launch as ‘incumbent 2G operators [like Globe] can roll out fairly quickly given its existing cellsites and infrastructure.’ The Philippines’ telecoms regulator, the National Telecommunications Commission, has also awarded 3G licences to PLDT unit Smart Communications, Digitel Mobile Philippines and new player Connectivity Unlimited Resources (Cure).
