Telecom requests clearance to buy radio spectrum

10 Oct 2005

New Zealand incumbent Telecom New Zealand Limited (Telecom) has applied to the country’s telecoms regulator, the Commerce Commission, for permission to purchase radio spectrum management rights, otherwise known as the MED radio frequency auction No 5 lot 01 WLL 06, from Counties Power Limited (CPL). The spectrum coming under the hammer concerns radio frequencies in the 3,459MHz – 3,466MHz and 3,559MHz – 3,566MHz bands. In judging the merits of the application the Commission will be concerned to ensure that the acquisition would not have an adverse effect on market competition. Formerly known as the Franklin Electric Power Board, CPL is now owned by the Counties Power Community Trust.
