State-run fixed line operator Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) has contracted Ericsson to expand its fixed wireless access (FWA) CDMA2000 1x network to the north-west and south-west of the country. The USD46 million deal is the latest venture between the two companies, which have been working together since Ericsson supplied the telco with the country’s first mobile network in 1990. NITEL launched a pilot FWA CDMA service to 5,000 users in Lagos last month in partnership with Motorola, ahead of the rollout of 290,000 lines in the region by year end.
