América Móvil looking to migrate Smartcom’s users to GSM

8 Sep 2005

Chile’s smallest mobile operator Smartcom is preparing to sign a contract with German vendor Siemens to build out a nationwide GSM network and migrate its 100% CDMA subscriber base to GSM, according to BNamericas. In early August, pan-American mobile group América Móvil (AM) completed the takeover of Smartcom in a deal worth USD472 million, and revealed a plan to replace the cellco’s CDMA platform with GSM infrastructure to achieve conformity with its other cellular operations in the region. Smartcom claimed 1.7 million subscribers at the end of June and expects to finish the year with 1.8 million; the migration of its customers would require AM to invest between USD200 million and USD250 million.
