The Indian government is set to announce a new national telecoms policy, covering a wide range of issues from spectrum allocation and research to equipment manufacture and services, according to the Minister for Communications and IT, Shakeel Ahmed. Other areas to be covered by the new policy include tariffs, technology, deregulation, value-added products and service quality. Ahmed added that the government was giving priority to rural telephony and has vowed to increase teledensity in rural areas to 4% by 2010 – up from its present average of 1.74%.
