Anatel may extend Brasil Telecom/TI deadline

23 Jun 2005

Telecoms regulator Anatel has said it might extend the 18 July deadline to resolve the mobile overlap dispute between Brasil Telecom GSM (BrT GSM) and Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM). The country’s telecoms legislation does not permit a controlling partner to hold its own wireless licence in the same region as the company it controls; the dispute between BrT GSM and TIM arose after the two struck an agreement to merge their operations earlier this year, meaning that the new company would own two wireless concessions in the same areas. Anatel has told the two operators to reach an agreement on their own.
