State-run telco Mahanger Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) marked World Telecoms Day yesterday by unveiling two new packages offered under its broadband banner ‘Triband’. The first features a pay-as-you-go tariff scheme to attract low-usage broadband subscribers, the second offers unlimited night-time web browsing and downloading, effective between the hours of twelve midnight and eight in the morning. The company says it will also be launching a triple-play Triband service featuring voice calls, internet access and cable television, including free-to-air channels and pay channels. MTNL is aiming to add at least 90,000 broadband connections to its existing network of 180,000 in its current fiscal year but says it is currently only adding 250 new subscribers a month, a figure it needs to double to achieve its target.
Elsewhere, rival Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) yesterday said it will extend its broadband services to the state of Sikkim next month.
