Filipino telcos have been urged to stop opposing the government’s initiative to fully deregulate the telecoms sector and allow the widespread take up of voice over IP (VoIP) services. Earlier this month the regulator, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), published a draft policy that will enable all companies in the market to offer voice over IP (VoIP) calls for as little as USD0.10 per minute, but the nation’s existing telcos have opposed the plans.
In a separate story, Swedish equipment supplier Ericsson has asked the NTC to come up with new 3G guidelines to allow local mobile operators to offer a wider range of services. Ericsson is supplying W-CDMA networks for cellcos Globe and Smart.
