O2 Ireland has successfully completed trials of a WiMAX platform in rural Donegal and is mulling rolling out the technology as an extension of its wireless LAN hotspot service. O2 teamed up with Siemens and wireless solutions supplier Alvarion to test Alvarion’s BreezeMAX 3500 3G WiMAX-ready orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) platform, and was reportedly impressed with the results. ‘Having conducted trials on a number of technologies, the results from the trial showed that WiMAX was a viable solution for delivering broadband services to the rural areas of Ireland,’ O2 said in a statement.
