Teletalk, the new cellular arm of the Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB), completed a launch of full commercial services yesterday. BTTB claims to have already spent USD132 million on its GSM network rollout, with the total investment set to rise to USD333 million. The company says it is initially aiming for a quarter of a million subscribers, with a long term target of a million. Teletalk was ‘soft launched’ in December 2004 and is aiming to cover 55 of Bangladesh’s 64 administrative districts. The company says it has installed 110 base stations, with 100 more to be set up in the next few months; Teletalk is targetting an eventual total of 570 base stations, although an exact timescale has not been specified.
