Swisscom and Belgacom to merge wholesale carrier businesses

24 Feb 2005

Belgian telco Belgacom is merging its wholesale international carrier business with Switzerland’s biggest operator Swisscom, in the first joint venture between the two companies. The headquarters for the new operation will be in Brussels, with a satellite office in Switzerland, and Belgacom will have a 72% stake with the Swiss company owning the remainder. Fixed line division Swisscom Fixnet is to cut 100 jobs as a result of the restructuring, which came about, according to Swisscom, because of the severe competitive pressure on prices in the wholesale carrier market, partly due to overcapacity.
