Filipino cellco Smart Communications has bought USD70 million worth of core network equipment from Nokia, as part of a plan to enhance its existing GSM/GPRS network and introduce EDGE services. The cellco said it will deploy the new GSM equipment in areas currently underserved or unserved by its existing network, while EDGE will be rolled out in metropolitan areas first.
