Regulator approves Uunet’s operator licence

6 Jan 2005

The Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK) has approved Uunet Kenya Limited’s request for an internet backbone and gateway operators’ licence, allowing it to join Kenya Data Network and Jamii Telecoms in competing with Telkom Kenya’s unit, JamboNet. However, the licence award stipulates that Uunet must first cease activities as an ISP and transfer its customers to another company. The operator will also be required to pay a licence fee of KES15 million (USD191,498).
