Ofcom prepares for VoIP

Ofcom has taken a step towards finalising its plans for the regulation of the VoIP market by picking the dialling prefix and publishing a consumer guide for the service. VoIP users will have the choice of using the new 056 code or a number related to their geographic location. Ofcom has promised to oversee the emerging market with a light touch: ‘Our first task as regulator is to keep out of the way,’ said its chief executive Stephen Carter.
