Sales down, profit up at Alcatel

30 Apr 2004

The French equipment manufacturer Alcatel has posted a first quarter net profit of EUR134 million, despite a slight fall on its 2003 sales figure of EUR2.74 billion. The company has attributed the profit to a one-time gain from the sale of its SAFT battery division and to positive results at all three of its main operating divisions: fixed, mobile and private communications. The company has increased its forecasts for both the current quarter and the full 2004 financial year.
