Telefónica fined for abuse of position

7 Apr 2004

Spain’s competition authority has ordered Telefónica to pay a record EUR57 million fine for abuse of its dominant market position. The decision follows complaints made by fixed line competitors in 2000, which claimed Telefónica was hampering consumer access to alternative providers. The former monopoly operator, which at the end of 2003 still controlled 78% of Spain’s fixed line market, is expected to appeal against the decision.
