MTS’ parent takes stake in group of rival operators

10 Dec 2003

Sistema, the holding company that controls Russia’s biggest cellco Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), has purchased a 50% in Skylink CJSC, a grouping of networks operating on the outdated NMT-450 technology in direct competition with MTS. The NMT operators are currently beginning to convert to the more modern but so far little used CDMA-450 standard; at present around 40,000 of Russia’s 33.5 million mobile users are connected to CDMA-450 networks.
