International Voice Market Improving

Traffic Up, Revenue Steady

After consecutive years of negative or zero revenue growth, the international voice business is beginning to show signs of improvement. Global cross-border traffic grew over 14 percent last year and is on pace to repeat in 2005. Because retail prices have begun to stabilize from a long plunge, the overall effect on revenue has been positive. According to the latest update to TeleGeography's international voice research, revenues reached $65.2 billion in 2004, up seven percent from the previous year.

International VoIP

The role of Voice over IP in the international voice market continues to grow. Based on TeleGeography's latest forecasts, international VoIP traffic should exceed 42 billion minutes in 2005, over 16% of the global market. Wholesale VoIP specialists such as iBasis and Teleglobe continue to be the largest players in this market globally, although regional VoIP operators have begun to register significant traffic totals as well.
