High Mobile Termination Rates in Europe Draw Carrier Interest

Mobile subscribers generate 20 percent of international traffic and receive 30 percent of cross-border calls, according to data from TeleGeography 2005. With few mobile operators having international networks of their own, mobile operators have emerged as a key market segment for international wholesale carriers -- particularly as international termination rates remain persistently high.

It is this environment that is bringing increased interest on traffic to mobiles rather than traffic from mobiles. For instance, TeleGeography 2005 notes that while European mobile subscribers accounted for only 14 percent of total international traffic termination in 2003, they provided 42 percent of international carriers' termination payments.

These figures and analysis come from TeleGeography's flagship research service on international voice traffic, carriers, and pricing.
