Telcos want new law

Telecoms associations in Honduras are urging the government to speed up the introduction of a new telecommunications law to control the sector following market liberalization on 25 December. BNamericas says that the telco association Asetel has teamed up with a number of broadcasting and media groups to lobby for new legislation to be ready in time for the opening of the market. However, congress is taking a three-month break between September and December because of national elections so it is unlikely that the government will have time to push through a new law. Telcos fear that international newcomers will have access to better financing opportunities and could engage in anti-competitive practices.
