Phone users top twelve million

The number of fixed and mobile users in Nigeria has reached twelve million, up from less than a million in 1999, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission. The regulator says that the country’s 19 fixed line operators, including state owned incumbent NITEL, account for little over one million of the total, with the remainder signed up to the wireless services of Globacom, MTN, M-Tel and V-Mobile. Penetration for telephony services now stands at around 9%.
