Ministers cave in to demands for mobile masts next to schools

UK ministers have decided to ignore official recommendations and allow mobile network operators to build mobile masts next to schools, in a move that could lead to an ‘explosion’ of masts around the country. The Deputy Prime Minister has decided not to contest a judgement allowing masts to be built near schools in Harrogate, North Yorkshire - despite concerns that exposure to radiation from mobile phones damages the brain – potentially leaving the way clear for cellphone operators to erect thousands of them around the UK. Opponents say that there is increasing scientific concern over the long-term effects of exposure to radiowaves among those living in close proximity to masts, adding that children should be treated with even greater care as their skulls are thinner and immune systems less well developed, making them more vulnerable.
