More operators to face investigation over customer information leaks

According to Americas Network, the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) is set to launch another investigation into possible leaks of customer data from cable broadband providers. The regulator will investigate whether the companies violated regulations on client information; KCC official Paek Ki-Hoon said, ‘We'll check if they've followed rules in collecting and managing user information such as ID and contact numbers. We'll also look into the possibility there was sharing such information with telemarketing companies without prior user consent.’ It is expected that the enquiry will last up to 15 days, and those broadband operators likely to be investigated include Qrix, CJ Hello Vision, T-broad and C&M. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, the regulator recently imposed penalties on both KT Corp and LG Powercomm for similar offences, with both operators banned from signing up new broadband subscribers for 30 days and 25 days respectively.
