Third concession to be issued in near future

Romain Murenzi, Rwanda's Minister for Science, Technology, and Scientific Research, has revealed that a third operator may be licensed in the near future. 'The cabinet has already accepted the principle of making a third telecommunications licence available, in accordance with our 20-year information technology (IT) plan,' the minister said. A new licensee would provide competition to the country's two existing telcos, Rwandatel and MTN Rwanda. Mr Murenzi added that he was happy with the progress (details of which were reported in CommsUpdate on 19 June) of Rwandatel following the company's acquisition by Lap Green last year: 'Rwandatel is complying with the contract that we signed before the takeover.'
