New satellite broadband service

European satellite operator SES Astra has launched a broadband service in Germany in partnership with Oder-based broadband provider Filiago. The satellite service is aimed at the 2.9 million German homes (mainly in isolated rural areas) that are unable to get terrestrial broadband. Astra2Connect is available in three speeds: 256kpbs, 512kbps or 1Mbps costing EUR19.95 (USD26.67), EUR29.95 and EUR39.95 respectively. The satellite dish and modem costs EUR99.95 and installation costs a further EUR130, although it is possible for the customer to install the equipment himself.
