Apple names Cingular as iPhone carrier

Following the public unveiling of its new iPhone, which adds communications capabilities to its popular iPod media player, Apple Inc has selected Cingular Wireless as the exclusive US carrier for iPhone users. Apple said it chose to partner with Cingular because it is the ‘best and most popular’ cellular operator in the US. Stan Sigman, Cingular’s president and CEO, commented: ‘We think the iPhone is one of the most innovative devices ever created, and we look forward to letting our customers be the first in the world to experience the future of mobile phones.’ The new device, which features a touch-sensitive screen instead of a traditional keypad, is set to be launched in the US in June, with the basic 4GB model priced at USD499.
