6,000 NITEL staff to be sacked

Nigerian telco NITEL has announced that it may cut 6,000 staff by the end of May this year. The job cuts are part of a plan to reorganise the company, under which the country’s Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) will raise a NGN12 billion (USD0.09 billion) ‘stabilisation fund’ for the telco. NITEL, which currently has around 300,000 active lines and a workforce of 10,000, has not paid its workforce for two months claiming it is in economic difficulties.
