Ecuadorian mobile market grows by 75%

In 2005, Ecuador’s mobile market grew by 75% to reach a total of six million subscribers at the end of December. Mexican group América Móvil’s subsidiary Conecel, which offers services under the Porta Celular brand name, leads the sector after signing up 1.7 million net new users in the year to take its total to 4.2 million at end-December, or 65% of the market. Porta competes with Movistar, owned by Spain’s Telefónica Móviles and Telecsa, which operates under the brand name Alegro.
